Publishing platform indie.io is constantly working hard on its relationships with indie developers. From offering development and marketing support to management and distribution, indie.io helps multiple new games get off the ground. We’ve been looking at five of its upcoming offerings that are perfect for this upcoming spooky season.
Throughout the next few weeks, indie.io will release The Hungry Fly, The Dead Await, Moon Mystery, Everholm, and Retreat to Enen. Each game brings something unique to the table, showcasing indie.io’s love for variety and offering a mix of thrills and cozy gameplay perfect for the season. Whether you’re looking for something to send a chill down your spine or a cozy game to curl up with, we’ve found the perfect lineup for every mood this spooky season.
The Hungry Fly
The Hungry Fly is set for release on October 23, and it tells the story of, surprisingly enough, a hungry little fly with razor-sharp teeth who just loves nothing more than the taste of dead things. You’ll help the hungry fly on its quest to find something dead to devour in a swamp where nothing actually dies. The poor little bug is strangely endearing, but its surroundings are absolutely vile.
The world is utterly surreal, and every choice you make matters. It’s quite a disturbing tale, as this nightmarish existence unfolds and challenges your perception along the way. Developer team Erupting Avocado has created the ultimate adventure game to uncover throughout the dark nights of October, and we can’t wait to see which decisions you all make for our hungry little fly friend. Hopefully something dies soon…
The Dead Await
Where The Hungry Fly has a strangely lovable little cannibal as our protagonist, The Dead Await shifts to a hybrid of a more traditional horror game with a modern twist. It’s both a zombie survival and a deck battler game, but the unique aesthetics are where it really shines. If you enjoy the visuals of Dark and Darker combined with deck-building games you’ll love The Dead Await.
It aims to blend realism with a grungy aesthetic and enters early access on October 24. You’ll be tasked with transporting a caravan full of apocalypse survivors through a desolate world. Choose your own route through the ruins, tracking down water, food, fuel, and maintaining the inhabitants’ sanity along the way. It’s not all plain sailing though, as you’ll also be faced with ravenous hordes of zombies to contend with. Combat is turn-based, and powered by cards and a robust character system that sees your survivors donning unique attributes, skills, and perks alongside weapons, equipment, and craftable meals. Can you survive, or will you become zombie food?
Moon Mystery
If you’re alone on the moon, can anyone hear you scream…? Set in a reality where space travel is commonplace, you play an astro-geologist sent to the Moon on a research expedition. Accompanied only by TOBY, a robot assistant, it doesn’t take long before your contact is lost with Earth and you’ll be thrust into a tense mystery to uncover what happened.
While it’s not spooky in the blood-and-zombies sense, the quiet emptiness of Moon Mystery’s vast environments definitely kept us on edge. Due to release on October 28, you’ll have to pilot multiple vehicles, confront malfunctioning bots with a vast array of weaponry, and solve puzzles to survive this isolated, hostile environment.
Everholm
Everholm is an adorable pixel adventure game, which sees you stepping into the shoes of Lilly. She’s been transported to a mysterious island where everyone seems to know her, and her mission to find her missing sister. With no memories of her own remaining, Lilly needs to engage with the residents, or Everfolks as they’re known, and learn the secrets surrounding the mystery she desperately seeks to solve.
Everholm is set for release just after Halloween, on November 11, but we just had to include its endearing pixel art style with a spooky twist for our roundup. The game allows you to determine your own playstyle; focusing on building relationships and discovering the islander’s secrets through 20 unique storylines; customizing your homestead through farming, fishing, and foraging, or pursuing the mystery at the heart of Lilly’s sister’s disappearance through minimalist RPG combat elements… making it the perfect cozy game to spend a long late Autumn night with.
Retreat to Enen
Finally, we’ve been taking time to relax with Retret to Enen. While Retreat to Enen is already out on PC, it’s also coming to PlayStation and Xbox consoles on October 30. The base-building simulator is set 1,500 years in the future. This dystopian survival game brings a welcome twist, as you’re tasked with living off the land through foraging, hunting, crafting, building, and meditation. Yes, you read that right. It’s equally relaxing and engaging, meaning you can play your way to a certain degree.
With multiple biomes to explore and over 150 items to unlock and use, you can build your own version of the perfect futuristic existence. There’s a meditative calmness that we love, but the dystopian setting adds just enough tension to make us feel like something could go wrong at any moment- especially with the nighttime threats that emerge. It’s a beautiful mix of survival and serenity, with stunning biomes that offer moments of peace.. We’re particularly fond of the dancing stars in the night sky, which are made possible thanks to Retreat to Enen’s complex weather simulation system. After a few rounds of horror, this game has been a refreshing change of pace.
That wraps up our spooky season roundup of indie.io’s offerings. Which are you excited to get your hands on? We’ve had hours of fun with all of them, but you can find us under a blanket, hot drink in hand, helping Lilly track down her sister in Everholm for the foreseeable future.
